Selenium elicitation and increase of secondary metabolites production by suspension-cultured Astragalus verus cells

چکیده مقاله:
Secondary metabolites with low molecular weight and high economic, pharmaceutical and industrial values play an important role in protecting plants against biotic and abiotic stresses. Astragalus is a medicinal herb, rich in secondary metabolites. Selenium (Se) is an essential element for humans, animals, many bacteria, and a beneficial element for plants. The plants response to selenium is depending on their species and the Se supply concentration. In the present study, calli were established from the seeds of Astragalus verus and suspension cultures were established from the calli. The cells were treated with different concentrations of sodium selenate (0, 0.5, 2.5, 12.5, and 62.5 μM) for 1 week at their logarithmic growth phase (based on growth curve). Cell growth and viability significantly decreased by selenium at concentrations higher 2.5 μM. In comparison with control group, significant increases in Abscisic acid and Salicylic acid were observed at higher Se concentrations, whereas methyl jasmonate significantly increased at lower Se supply. At 62.5 μM Se supply the contents of alkaloids, phlobaphene, steroidal and triterpenoid saponins, and tannin respectively increased by 5.1, 1.51, 1.62, 1.75, and 2.04 times of control. The results provides a practical method for remarkable stimulation of natural compounds of Astargalus by Se.

متن کاملNano-Elicitation of Secondary Pharmaceutical Metabolites in Plant Cells: A Review
In recent years, metabolism researches using nanomaterials have been focusing on human and animal cells, and therefore very limited data are available about influence of nanomaterials on biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in plant cells. Plants produce different types of secondary metabolites including terpenoids, phenolics, tannins, and alkaloids, which are known to act as vital mediators f...
متن کاملMeasuring NO production by plant tissues and suspension cultured cells.
We describe an inexpensive and reliable detector for measuring NO emitted in the gas phase from plants. The method relies on the use of a strong oxidizer to convert NO to NO2 and subsequent capture of NO2 by a Griess reagent trap. The set-up approaches the sensitivity for NO comparable to that of instruments based on chemiluminescence and photoacoustic detectors. We demonstrate the utility of o...

Microbial natural products continue to be an unparalleled resource for pharmaceutical lead discovery, but the rediscovery rate is high. Bacterial and fungal sequencing studies indicate that the biosynthetic potential of many strains is much greater than that observed by fermentation. Prodding the expression of such silent (cryptic) pathways will allow us to maximize the chemical diversity avail...
متن کاملSecondary metabolites from the roots of Astragalus maximus
Background and objectives: Astragalus is one of the most abundant genera of flowering plants in Iran. There are a few reports on phytochemical investigation of this valuable genus. Saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides have been reported as the most important metabolites in Astragalus species. In the present research, we aimed to identify the foremost const...
